Shocker! Yellowjackets Win!

In a surprise result, Sean’s Huachucha City Yellowjackets football team came away with a victory today. This is Sean’s third year of tackle football with the team and this is the first game they have won in those three years.

They didn’t just win the game today, it was total domination as they came away with a 20 – 0 victory. I did not recognize that team that played today. They were actually organized, emotional and played together. It was indeed a sight to behold after watching three years of defeats. They were so dominant today that they only gave up 3 first downs in the whole game, 1 in the first half and 2 in the second half. The Willcox kids drove into the red zone one time, a drive on which they had their two first downs in the second half.

I have to give a lot of credit to the coaches this week. They decided to work on defense most of the week in practice and it showed. They also made a bold move and switched the kids to a Bear defense and it worked beautifully. The kids adapted to it amazingly well and were very effective in shutting down the opposing team. Sean played the left Bear in this defensive set and just shut down runs to his side. I had been hoping all year they would put Sean in a position similar to that where he can see offensive set better and react.

On the offensive side, they stopped trying a lot of razzle dazzle type plays and just ran the ball. They ran it effectively. Their three touchdowns all came on runs of 50+ yards, but they moved the ball all day. Sean played right tackle today after the coaches asked him to switch from guard. The kid who lined up opposite from him didn’t record a tackle all day.

It was great to see the kids all happy and what not with their first victory in three years. They even went as far as to dump a cooler of water on the coach. It will be interesting next week to see if Willcox was really that bad or the kids are starting to play some football.

After the game, we went to Apple Annie’s Orchard and had some food and picked some apples. Well, okay, we picked a lot of apples. We got some Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, Granny Smith and Rome Beauty apples. The kids had a ball. We had some fresh apple pie and ice cream. If made for a nice afternoon. We had planned to pick some pumpkins too for Halloween but decided it was still a bit early for that.

All this made for a long day. We left the house at 10:00 this morning and just returned about 6:30 pm. All worth it to see Sean finally win a game.

I remember picking apples years ago. What a great tradition. Also, great family time – memories that last a lifetime.

I picked cherries today. (at the Casino – on the slots) Finally came awayi a winner. Love that fruit.

  4. ๐Ÿ˜† nice, picking cherries at the casino… I like it… ๐Ÿ˜‰ winner? big winner? send some this away… ๐Ÿ˜Ž

  5. It wasnt like I remember picking apples… When we did it in Michigan, I remember there being ladders and having to go high to get the apples… In Arizona, the trees are small and no ladders are needed… you have a picker on a broom stick sized pole… or for me, just reach up and pick it…

  6. Great win Sean! By a landslide…..congrats!
