Summer Dance Recital – Night 2
June 10, 2007
Whew… The Summer Dance Recital is over. It was two long nights of dancing. That said, it was still very enjoyable – it just didn’t leave much time for anything else this weekend.
The big night for the kids was the Friday night dance performances as they had many more dances than last night. Savannah was in three dances last night. Sean was in thwo dances last night. Suzanne did another four or five dances.
Savannah did a repeat performance of her pom pom routine. Suzanne is the teacher for that class. After their initial performance to open the show, they stayed on the stage and did mini performances while the rest of the dance studio dancers paraded around the studio. She also did a clogging routine and a Polynesian dance.
Sean did a Broadway dance with a young girls group. He played the part of Broadway producer from 42nd street and really got into his character. He didn’t do a whole lot of dancing. He was also in the same clogging routine as Savannah.
Suzanne, of course, was in the pom pom routine and did a whole series of Mexican folkloric dances.
I had hoped to take a bunch of pictures at this performance and put up an album here at Mr Papa’s World, however, Suzanne did it to me again with the camera. She actually remembered to bring it, but when I went to start taking pictures, there was only room for about 8 pictures. It’s a 2 GB card, so that’s pretty sad. Some pictures on there were almost a year old.
Due to the dark lighting conditions, it probably didn’t matter as it was very hard to get any pictures to come out. Usually, I am able to get enough pictures even in the dark lighting, but last night was different for some reason. I don’t know if I was doing something wrong, or it was just darker. Anyways, we didn’t get enough pictures to create a photo album, so I have attached five of the better photos embedded within this post. That said, even these photos are not very good, in fact their quality is poor. Next time, I need to take the tripod to get a steadier shot in the dark with limited lighting.
The image below is the DUDES (Dads United to Dance and Entertain on Stage) performance of Michael Jackson’s Thriller. The kids really want me to do a dance with DUDES, but it’s hard with my schedule and the desire isn’t really there, except to make the kids happy. Maybe next show…
Next stop on the dance circuit, is the Showstopper National Dance Finals in Anaheim in late July.
Summer Dance Recital
June 9, 2007
Last night was the first night of Suzanne’s and the kids’ summer dance recital. The show was about 2 1/2 hours but quite enjoyable.
Savannah did something like 11 dances last night. She was a busy girl changing costumes all night. She performed dances from genres such as lyrical, jazz, hip hop, Mexican folklorico and Spanish Flamenco. She did a great job. She worked so hard that she fell asleep in the car on the way home.
Sean did about 5 dances last night including dances from genres such as hip hop, break dancing and Mexican folklorico. The duet that he and Savannah did for El Jarabe Tapatio (Mexican Hat Dance), got a loud ovation from the crowd.
Last night was the first dance recital for Suzanne as an instructor at the dance studio. She is teaching pom pom dance and after the summer will likely be adding a Broadway style song and dance class. Her girls performed the opening number for the summer recital. In addition, at the start of the show, Suzanne sang Happy Birthday as it’s also the 10th Anniversary of the opening of the Alma Dolores Dance Studio. Suzanne did a number of Mexican folklorico and Spanish Flamenco dance numbers including a solo song and dance routine from Carmen.
What did Mr Papa do in the dance show? Nothing, nada, zippo, zilch. I just sat in the audience and enjoyed the show. They are still trying to get me to do the one routine that a group of Dads do at every dance recital. I continue to hold out, primarily because of the time and distance. The time actually isn’t that much except it’s in Sierra Vista which is 45 minutes away from home – after work – not high on my “want to do” list after getting home.
Tonight will be the second night. The kids and Suzanne will be doing a few less numbers tonight, though I plan to take the camera and try to snap a few pictures. Suzanne was nervous about her first dance recital and forgot it last night. So, maybe tomorrow, we can get some of those up here at Mr Papa’s World.
This summer recital is a good tune up for the kids before we all (yes, it appears I will go this year unless work travel pops up) head to Anaheim in July for the Showstopper National Dance Competition.
On a side note, we had another wildfire near us last night. It was about 5 or 10 miles away and threw up a bunch of smoke. When we got home last night, the air stunk of burnt materials and the smoke was hanging in the air. This morning, they appear to have it under control already and the smoke has already mostly disappeared.
