Sean’s Team Doesn’t Lose

October 11, 2008

No, they didn’t win either. Technically, I guess they did lose as they had to forfeit only having 10 players for the game today. The weather has been pretty rough today – on and off rain – and several kids didn’t show up or did other things because they didn’t think we would play in the rain.

That kind of thought pretty much sums up the team – not really football players. Sean was disappointed. He was ready to go and with only two more games after today, he really wanted to play. It wasn’t even raining that hard and definitely no thunder and lightning, so not sure why you wouldn’t even bother to check.

Its been a fun day other than driving out for the game and then coming right back. The temperature has been wonderful, hovering around 70 all day. We shut the air conditioning off a few weeks ago and are just enjoying the cool breezes in the day and evenings. At nights, the temperature dips, so we have to close up the house.

The cancellation will give Sean and I a bit more gaming time today – woot!

Fun Day in Willcox

October 5, 2008

Yesterday being Saturday meant another day on the road for a football game. Sean’s game yesterday was in Willcox, AZ. Willcox is about 75 minutes away, so we planned make it most of a day trip to Willcox, which is another small rural town in SE Arizona and beloved home of deceased cowboy Rex Allen.

Willcox is also the location of Apple Annie’s orchard and vegetable farm. During football season, we usually make a trek out to Apple Annies after the football game and pick our own pumpkins for Halloween. We usually walk the farm too and pick our vegetables. If time permits, we also head over to their orchard and pick our own apples and pears. It makes for a fun day.

This year, however, the game coincided with Rex Allen Days festivities in Willcox, so our game was scheduled to be played at 3:00 pm. This kind of messed with our plans. So instead, we just made plans to go to the orchard, get some fruit and have some lunch. Apple Annie’s has a little shack they call the Burger Barn where the cook some nice burgers over apple wood. They are delicious. Plus, you get a slice of fresh home made pie and ice cream.

We got some apples (golden delicious, granny smith and fiji) and some pears (bartlett and asian). The burgers were delicious and the Apple Crumb Pie was heavenly. The weather was nearly perfect as the temperatures were only in the 70′s and the sun was hidden behind clouds – are rare treat this time of the year in Arizona.

As to the football, game it was a match up of win less teams in the league. Unfortunately, the result was the same as we lost 34 – 0. The game was never close. Sean played his best game of the year. He had many good tackles and forced the Willcox team to run the ball the other direction. On offense, he had the other team’s biggest kid – yes, outsized by at least 30 lbs – line up against him. Sean did a great job of keeping him out of the plays. The other kid was involved in maybe two tackles all day.

I think we have three games remaining this season. I don’t think we will win a game, but none the less will still have fun.
