Basketball Season Begins For Sean

November 6, 2008

Football season is barely over, but basketball season has begun for Sean this week. They have already played two games and his middle school team is 1 – 1. Sean is the starting point guard for the team.

Its ironic that he is even playing basketball. The sport was my favorite growing up as a kid and I played in high school and then intramurals in college and in work based leagues afterwards. I tried early in Sean’s life to get him interested in basketball and to work on his skills. Unfortunately, he showed no interest in basketball whatsoever. Our hoop outside went unused for years except for the occasional times I went out to shoot around.

It wasn’t until last year upon entering middle school that he got interested in basketball and tried out for the team and made it (okay, all the kids made it). He saw limited playing time last year, but has made the starting team this year.

The hoop outside is now in disarray and basically worthless. I guess its times to get a new one and impart my skills on him. I wasn’t MVP of the work league several years running for nothing. Seriously, I am excited that he likes hoops and now wants to play. I fear, however, that he is getting too late a start.

In the game this afternoon, where they evened their record with a victory, Sean had the winning bucket on a short jump shot. Unfortunately, afternoon is the key word there and I was not able to attend the game. In fact, I have yet to see a single game of his middle school team this year or last year.

For some reason, the games start at 3:00 or 3:30 and its really hard for me to get to the games. Just like football, road games are not that close by and even the home games are 40 minutes from work. They play every Tuesday and Thursday during the relatively short season. When I was playing in junior high (vs middle school), I don’t remember the games starting that early. I feel really guilty cause I don’t remember my Dad missing very many (if any) of any of my sporting events. I pride myself on making his football and baseball games, but there really isn’t any way to make these early basketball games. Still, I really wish I could and still feel guilty.

Sean’s Football Season Comes to a Close

October 25, 2008

Today was the last game of the season for Sean’s football team. It ended much the way it began, on a bad note. They lost again today by a score of 45 – 14 to Benson. It also closed out a winless season for the kids.

The game today was never close as Benson raced out to an early 27 – 0 lead in the first quarter. The Huachucha City kids actually played them tough in the last minutes of the first quarter and the entire second quarter holding them scoreless and putting up 7 points themselves.

The second half was all Benson and the game was never really in doubt. I think I said this last time we played Benson, but they sure grow their kids big there. They have one 11 year that is 6′ 3″ tall – at 11 years?? And he is not a lanky or skinny 6′ 3″ but a well built tank. He ran over several kids when he carried the ball. Sean was actually one of the few kids who had success tackling him as he went low and cut him at the knees though he too missed him a few times.

It also figured that the last game of the season was also the hottest game of the season. The temperatures for the games have been surprisingly mild this season. Today, however, there wasn’t a cloud in the sky and the sun beat down on us in about a 90 temperature – still not too bad.

After the game, we headed to Sierra Vista for my once every three or four years shopping sprees. I really, really hate buying (spending money on) clothes. I hate even worse having to shop for them. So, I just don’t do it very often. I tend to have a minimal number of clothes and wear them until they are too ragged to wear. That time is now and I am just about out of wearable clothes for work and other functions, especially the upcoming cruise.

So, off we went and replenished my wardrobe. I don’t even want to know how many hundreds of dollars I spent – it would just depress me. Hopefully, I am set for clothes for another 3 or 4 years. Suzanne will likely have to pick up and item here or there, but I hope to not have to clothes shop for some time.
