New Genealogy Site Live

April 30, 2007

Okay, my new genealogy site is live. Give it a try and let me know what you think.

As stated before, I usually my genealogy website primarily for the display of information. This new site is based on the TNG (The Next Generation) genealogy software. It seems to have a much nicer user interface and more sleeker look. Of course, I have massively tweaked the look for my taste.

My main genealogy tool is Family Tree Maker which I use offline. The data is then uploaded to the site for folks to peruse. I get a lot of feedback from the site. Folks provide comments, corrections and a lot of questions about whether or not we are related. It’s fun stuff.

I still have more to do on the genealogy site as that is only a weekends worth of work. Of course, I need to add a bunch of data too. If you had an account on the old genealogy site, I haven’t moved those accounts over yet. I need to investigate whether or not that is possible. Worst case, just request a new account on the new site. If you are not a user and logged in, you will be limited as too how much information you can see. A lot of the date is private for registered members only as a security precaution. I contol who has access.

As always, if you have any comments or feedback on the new site, let me know. And if you want to help with the research, let me know that too.

158th Website Relaunched

April 6, 2007

Sorry for having been mostly silent lately, but I have been hard at work relaunching my America’s Army clan site, The 158th Regimental Combat Team.

Our clan has used the same basic site design for the last 18 months. It was time to do something different. I spent the last couple months coming up with a new design. The previous design was dark and very AA related. I wanted something less dark and more professional looking. Hopefully, I have accomplished this.

Another goal of mine was to change the site CMS from php-nuke (yuck) to another system. I chose WordPress, which this site runs on, for the new CMS. It has better security and is more efficient. It also gives me the ability to add some new features that while possible, would be more difficult to do in nuke.

If you get a chance, stop by The Bushmasters and let me know what you think of the new site.

Next on my list of things to do is a complete redesign of the Cruise Talk Central website. The traffic at that site has picked up considerably and it’s time to update the offerings we have there for our visitors. The new site will look less like a blog and more like a full featured cruise fan site. Stay tuned for more details…
