Isaac Cummings

Deacon and sergeant of Narragansett War. He and Mary had 10 children.

Isaac lived in Ipswich. He was on the list of commoners. In 1672, Sergeant in the Narragensett War. He held various offices in the town as moderator, surveyor, constable and selectman. He was chosen deacon of the church in 1686. The story of his experience with the Minister Rev. Thomas Gilbert, shows that he was influential before he was deacon, for the minister, one day come into the pulpit badly beside himself from drink. His speech was confused and he forgot the order of exercises.

First he prayed and he sang, then he prayed again and sang again. Finally, Isaac Cummings arose and requested him to stop. The deacon was not above all the influences prevailing in him time.

For at the period of the 'witchcraft' excitement he testified in court against elizabeth how, that a mare of his was strangely affected under Elizabeth's bad influence.

His testimony was corroborated by that of Isaac, his son and of Mary, his wife.

Elizabeth How was condemned and executed in July 1692.

Isaac married Mary Andrews on 27 Nov 1659. Mary was born in 1638; died in 1712. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Isaac married Alice Howlet on 15 Dec 1688. Alice was born between 1650 and 1673 in Botsford, Mass; died between 1694 and 1745. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Isaac and Abigail married March 8, 1716. He was a farmer at Topsfield, Mass. They had six children. Abigail died at age 75 in 1771.

Joseph was born March 20, 1724 had 9 children. He was married 3 times. Mary Hovey Hale, Judith Patty Perkins and Lucy Knowlton. He was a very wealthy man. He lived in Topsfield. He had 9 children.
